Rat-a-tat-tat, there went another clip,
Straight through my fingers way to quick.
Crack, crack, crack came the reply
Calling through the air, from the other side.
We need more ammo the sergeant yelled,
More noise, more mud and more men fell.
Over the trenches came scrambling a soldier,
With a man, what was left, grasping his shoulder.
This war is merciless and cruel at best,
Leaving us soldiers no sleep and no rest.
But I am glad I signed up, all though that sounds odd,
Fighting for this nation, whose foundation is God.
Now that I'm older, I salute their graves,
Living in freedom, because of the price we paid.
