Excellence Award in the 'Just Keep Writing 2019' competition
The sound of continuous, deafening shots
Twisting my heart into endless knots
There is a trauma, a scary sensation
I feel unsafe in this imperfect creation
I want peace in this community
I want the world to be in unity
Every single day I feel I'm in danger
The possibilities of being attacked by a stranger
I want these crimes to come to an end
But our broken lives may never mend
Because there is always that limitless sorrow
Knowing that someone won't be there tomorrow
The painful wounds, the indelible scars
Suffocation, the feeling I'm trapped behind bars
Oh where, I ask, is this peace, this unity
We need so desperately in this community?
