Maybe, One Day

A family. She asked for a family.
And with that he shut his eyes,
Allowing himself a fleeting thought,
One so breathtaking it ached deep inside.

To imagine a little girl.
With his hair and her eyes,
God, her beautiful, intelligent eyes,
And a toothy smile, with gaps in-between.

As he would ask her to pass a screwdriver,
And from tiny, sticky hands,
Would receive a wrench with a giggle,
He could barely imagine such a miraculous thing.

So to her, he only responded,
With a barely there “maybe, one day”
If he ever let out a fond grin,
Well, that’s only for you and me to know.
