I still remember,
Us walking on a sunlit trail.
Best buddies we once said,
Forever and ever.

One gloomy day,
We got sent.
On a ship,
Bound for death.

On one fateful day the worst I thought happened,
I spotted you out of the corner of my eye.
Face down in the bloodstained mud.
Blood blooming on your smart uniform.

I watched you take your last short breaths,
As you died.
Best mate
Forever gone.
