Mother's Mirror

I've always had my mother's eyes
A burnt umber shade,
an auburn when the sun shines
So tell me, what does she see that I don't?

She looked just like me when she was younger
The most ebullient smile,
one the girls would envy
Do enlighten me, why can't I smile like that?

I bet she made her mother proud
A prized daughter with her prized sisters
What I would give
to make her proud like that

So do let me try again
I could be a better daughter
But you were all I could have been,
and you are all I might be
