I look around the muddy trenches
I see pain for loss of loved ones
I see fear of death by the enemy
I see anger for we have all been deceived
I see unhealthy, deprived bodies, tired from battle
I see tears shed for bravery of fellow soldiers
I see hunger for we haven’t had a decent meal in months
I see friends saying their final goodbyes, as they prepare
To step up to the frontline
But now, I don’t see, I remember
I remember they told us it would be fun
They told us we would look back and laugh
They told us we would all return heroes
They told us lies
