Far Apart, Forever Together

They were speaking, I was listening:-
All your lifetime’s achievements, and I knew… you were gone.
The wood was cold, my back forced straight, I was alone in the
Cavernous space, filled with unknown people… it was empty.
Of your great deeds they spoke, yet I never knew…
For me, you were another – mine, not theirs, to know.
Yes, you were great, but greater than that…
They spoke of your life, more than I knew, yet I did know you…
They said their last, I slowly left distraught,
Knew I must let go. Looking to the endless sky, I realised
I held to you -
Like a kite. You needed to soar, but to your string I clung.
With skyward sight, I spy you, kite… and remember, the spark
In your eyes, the sun in your smile, and it lights my way.
I cast away this string. Now, we can glide – for I am free
So soar, kite… far apart, forever together…
