You, The Lamb And I

We wandered on an outback station dead,
Leaving brave red plains and a strong blue sky,
To cool bare feet in a shady creek bed,
Slowly together did you, the lamb and I.
We thought to build a gundy, you, the lamb and me.
With plenty of leaves from the eucalypt trees,
We hoped the heat would fear us and flee,
As we lay inside on soft, scattered leaves.
We stayed, rest and played, inside the hut we had made,
Listening, thinking in the shade, you, me and the lamb.
Proud of what we’d made, till all thoughts began to fade,
But one of icy water and homemade bread with ham.
So we ran. Laughing, proud and happy,
Till the iron homestead came in sight,
And we heard the chain dogs, yappy,
As we guzzled water in delight!
