2nd in the 'Calling All Poets 2007' competition
My dreamself awakes in a delirious daze,
The earth cold as ice at its feet.
The room that encloses it, silent steel maze,
Every sign is screaming retreat!
The roots of the plants competing for food.
My dreamself will have to defeat them.
It becomes intertwined in this fatal floral feud,
Ripping root, pulling petal, slitting stem.
When the battle is over, my dreamself then lays
On the cool, chilled banks of the bog.
Pace picks up, trees are ablaze!
Something is lurking in the fog.
Ten eyed goblin laughing, leering at me.
Out of the flames it leaps.
I know my only release will ever be
When my dreamself finally sleeps.
