Patch-Worked Path

Through time and man a path’s been made
and of the ages shows its passing.
Crude-made track of trampled grass-
scuffed up dirt but longer lasting.

As years go by and knowledge grows
a path’s laid of some shabby concrete,
and worn and weathered by the rain,
the cracks from sun and snow and sleet.

Though when the pavement is replaced
by a younger, stronger king
traces of its ancestor
remain, an ugly, mocking grin.

But time goes forth to weaken, run
along these concrete paths of men,
and youth grows old and then to fail-
the path will need an heir again.

So tramples paths will time perform:
and from above, a vantage high
a crazy patchwork- concrete quilt
and ancestors who’ll never die.
