Happy in Tears

Sometimes we need to cry
To help release the pain
To feel the tears come trickling
And bring us home again
Awake us to reality
That this is all too real
And as the tears drip off your chin
The heart-ache you will feel
The back of your throat burning
As the barriers fall down
The walls you built are yearning
To crash in all their sound
You’re shaking and you’re trembling
The thoughts twirl and collide
Everything that’s hurting
Tumbling round inside
For when we cry we surrender
To all the shields we drop
All we see is bad and wrong
There’s nothing we can stop
But in the back way behind
Where we keep our smiles
There are hidden memories
We don’t see for a while
They’re always there but covered
In other thoughts of pain
We block them out with our minds
And don’t know they’ll help us gain
But these memories have purpose
Not just lying dead
They help bring back the good
When sadness clouds our head
A simple sun is rising
Or the moon is looking down
The pretty soothing colours
Sit there safely sound
A memory so lovely
You grin at the mere thought
A spider web is glistening
As dawn the sight is caught
A lake so early in the day
The trees not whisper yet
The water still as thick as glass
The shadows cast a net
Or a tree as you sit
Under it’s huge braches
The squiggly little markings
In bark as if it dances
Just look up and follow
The trunk as it ascends
The boughs built as levels
Steps for mighty men
The thought that these trees stand
For many many years
No-one takes the notice
But still they stand right here
And this is the time
When you fel a shrug
As peace fills your limbs
Just give the tree a hug
A flower just is blooming
Or grass breaks through the drought
A sheet of rain hits the ground
And bounces back in shout
Just watch the stars appearing
In evenings of whistling winds
A sky of blue and yellow
Stars wink in silent sing
These memories that we have seen
Stay with us for a time
And when we need them most of all
Is when the tears arrive
When our eyes spill over
Blink hard in denied joy
Nothing makes at all a sense
Like a broken child’s toy
When we can’t find happiness
In anything we see
When the birds seem ugly
And life just seems too mean
When you can’t bear the touch
Of a helping hand
You move away from a hug
And melt into your land
The memories sit waiting
They’ll wait for all your years
So your can smile and hold yourself
Be happy in your tears.
